"Apparently a natural storyteller, Christopherson instinctively arranges people and
objects into nostalgic tableaux or symbolic narratives. In close-up photos of rusting automobiles,
he transforms a chrome emblem into a line of birds flying over grassland and accentuates
the faded nobility of an Indian-head hood ornament.

His eye for ornament and gesture is especially effective in portraits of friends and family
members photographed at home, surrounded by a lifetime accumulation of things.
In "Paul's Chair," an elderly man is almost invisible, slumped before an off-camera television
while a drooping poinsettia, tidy TV-tray end table and reproduction painting of a praying man
testify to the somber respectability of his life.

The symbolism of a child (Christopherson's daughter) knocking on the door of a
pyramid-shaped tomb is more than heavy-handed, and the humor is apparently unintentional
in his pictures of sprightly young models embracing mannequins in coffins and holding skulls
in desert tableaux. But Christopherson's remakes of two famous Man Ray photos --
"Satiric Dancer" and "Noire et Blanche" -- are brilliant: images that
perfectly evoke the playful sensuality of the originals."
